Dr. Amanda Richardson, Registered Psychological Assistant

Dr. Amanda Richardson is a registered psychological assistant with over twelve years of experience working directly with children, teens, adults, and families. She was raised locally in El Dorado Hills but went to college and grad school on the island of Oahu. She earned her B.A. degree in Psychology from Hawai’i Pacific University, and continued on to obtain her Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Clinical Psychology from Hawai’i School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University.

Dr. Richardson believes in viewing the individual as a unique “whole”, while respecting the systems and environment in which they live. She gives her clients the freedom and space to discover what is important and necessary for change. Rather than focusing on dysfunction, she concentrates on finding solutions while emphasizing personal choice and responsibility. She believes that everyone has the right and ability to fulfill their personal potential and maximize their mental health and well-being.

Dr. Richardson’s experience ranges from treating those with severe mental illness to helping others in need during a time of transition and adjustment. She is skilled in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Person-Centered Therapy (PCT), and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), but uses tools from many other therapeutic orientations as appropriate. Dr. Richardson tailors her techniques and therapy plan to the needs of each client and values their unique perspectives and goals. In addition to her years of working with adults, Dr. Richardson has years of experience working with children and adolescents in Hawaii’s school system, providing therapeutic and testing services to families involved with the court systems, as well as community outreach prevention programs and multi-systemic therapy groups with families and adolescents. She is passionate about helping families communicate in a healthy and effective way, where everyone feels seen and valued.

In her personal life, Dr. Richardson is a busy mom to her two young boys. She and her husband like to travel and spend time with their children. She has been a life-long athlete who enjoys yoga, weightlifting, kickboxing, and dancing. While in Hawai’i, she fell in love with the ocean and became a certified SCUBA diver, logging over 100 dives!

Even though in therapy we talk about serious issues,
counseling doesn’t need to be scary.
